Overview

Established by the 18th-century Sufi saint and educator Beket-Ata, this underground site is a site of profound historical and spiritual significance. Carved directly into the limestone of the Ustyurt Plateau, the complex consists of small prayer and teaching chambers. Historically a center for spiritual healing and fundamental religious literacy, it continues to attract thousands of pilgrims as a major hub of Kazakh traditional Islamic practice.
